This is your union:
Dave was elected for his “Membership First” attitude. He understands that political and social involvement are essential but that it must never come before the MEMBERS, their JOBS and JOB SECURITY. The Union does not need to participate, debate or casually throw money at ideas that will not benefit our members, their jobs or enhance job security. We must stay in our lane and refocus our time and energy on what is the main thing…..our members. Dave brought in an open-door policy that made the President as accessible as your partner or colleague in the workplace. This action aided in ending years of “entitlement thinking” which had created a gap between the leadership and the rank and file members. Members have a voice and must always have a voice – this is critical. Keeping members in the dark does not grow or strengthen an organization. Dave, recognizing all of this, implemented effective communication initiatives by using various social media platforms that ensured that the local leadership kept in touch and up-to-date with the members.
What Dave has accomplished in Windsor with one of the most prominent locals in Unifor and with the National Skilled Trades, he will do in Toronto and for the rest of the country. Dave will bring the Union back to the members – where it belongs. Your voice matters. Your decision matters. This is YOUR UNION.
On the Issues:
Building upon that foundation were the pillars of organizing, bargaining and education that combined created a powerful and effective structure benefitting our members. Somewhere along the way, the union strayed from this path. This straying may have been due to the lure of unrestricted power or the belief of “entitlement” or through the promise of political fortune but it caused the national union’s focus to become clouded. The focus needs to go back to where it should be – on the MEMBERS. To bring this focus back, Dave’s strong leadership and a proven record are needed. Dave Cassidy will sharpen our focus, strengthen our foundation and will keep the main thing, the main thing – YOU. Fighting for you is what Dave has consistently done on the ground at the bargaining table, not from the sidelines. Your voice matters. Your decision matters. This is YOUR UNION.
Membership First:
There are too many important decisions made by only a few at the top of Unifor. It is hard to know you are serving the members to the fullest if only a handful of our 310,000 members at the top are making the critical decisions. We need to invest more input from all the local Presidents who know exactly what their members want from their National Union. There is a wealth of information and direction that we need from our local Presidents and their members! A National Executive Board is important, but it needs to be drawing proper direction and information from our members. We never want our NEB to be out of touch.
My administration will be based on a member-up approach rather than a top-down. I will be relying heavily on direction from our local Presidents who are on the facilities floors and in touch with all our members.
Membership needs a stronger voice.
This is Your union.
We need to listen to our Members. Membership meetings are the heart of a local union. Leadership is held accountable, concerns are addressed, and we get to gather with one another.
Membership meetings are the perfect blend of Transparency and Accountability!
As National President, I will visit each of our locals to make membership meetings with as many different locals as I can each year. To update our members on where we are as a union but, more importantly, to LISTEN and HEAR the concerns of our members. Our National President needs to be visible, transparent and held accountable to our rank and file members.
This is YOUR Union!

Our Great Retirees,
You can’t build a building on a weak foundation. You can try but that building will crumble and fall.
You, the retirees ARE our foundation. I believe it is crucial to have a strong foundation. My administration will work on building a healthy strong foundation with our retirees.
We will be known as The Union with strong recognition of our retirees’ chapters.
Retirees will also be given a better avenue to voice their concerns directly to the National President.
Solid structures are Built from the ground up!

HOW YOU CAN HELP
The National President in
Unifor is elected by
The Unifor Constitution states: The President and Secretary-Treasurer shall be elected by the *Convention for a three-year term, by secret ballot or another secure confidential voting system on a per capita basis. To be elected to office, the candidate must receive a majority of votes cast.
The locals send delegates on a per capita (of the population of their membership) representing the votes from that local—the bigger the local membership, the more delegates, the more votes towards electing the National President.
The National Executive Board has already chosen who they believe should be the next President, without giving you an opportunity for input. We think you should decide. Your voice matters, your decision matters.
This is Your Union.
We urge you all to let your local Presidents know that you want delegates who are free to vote for whom they believe is best for our Union. The candidate who will bring the focus back to our Jobs and our Job security. The hard-working local President and National Trades chair with proven leadership at the Local and National levels.
Your voice is needed in this fight to bring the
Union back to the people!
